Menorca has clear-water coves, houses that make you want to stay and country lanes where it is easy to lose track of time. After dark, it also has another collection of stories: disappearances, tragic endings and accounts that might make you glance twice down the hallway.<\/p>\n

This Halloween in Menorca<\/strong>, we explore the island\u2019s darker storytelling tradition. With curiosity, a little humour and a clear distinction between a compelling tale and evidence of the supernatural. A rattling shutter can sound alarming, but it is worth consulting the tramontana wind first.<\/p>\n

Menorca has its macabre stories too<\/h2>\n

Mystery did not arrive on the island with Halloween pumpkins. For generations, local stories have given voices to caves, stones and corners of the landscape. Spain\u2019s Ministry of Culture lists Menorca\u2019s legends as intangible cultural heritage<\/a>, an oral tradition that includes enchantments and frightening tales, changing as they pass from one storyteller to another.<\/p>\n

That is part of their appeal. A familiar path feels different when someone begins a sentence with \u201cThey say that here\u2026\u201d Suddenly, the walk becomes more interesting, and you discover you were not quite so keen on going alone after all.<\/p>\n

Cova d\u2019en Xoroi: more than a sunset<\/h2>\n

In the legend of Xoroi<\/a>, a man hides in a cave and a young woman disappears nearby. Years later, footprints in the snow reveal their refuge, where they live with their children. The story ends with Xoroi and his eldest son disappearing into the sea.<\/p>\n

This is a legend, rather than verified history. Behind the familiar image of the cliff lies an unsettling tale of a woman\u2019s disappearance and a tragic ending. Hearing it changes the mood of the landscape, however beautiful the sea remains.<\/p>\n

That is what such stories do so well: they offer another way of seeing places we think we know. There is no need to decorate every cave with cobwebs. Some already have a script of their own.<\/p>\n

From oral tradition, we turn to a modern account that reached Spanish television. The former Verge del Toro hospital in Mah\u00f3n<\/strong>, also known as Virgen del Toro, was the setting for reports of unusual experiences discussed on Cuarto Milenio<\/em>, the mystery programme presented by Iker Jim\u00e9nez.<\/p>\n

The official listing for episode 288, broadcast on 30 September 2012<\/strong>, describes an incident at a Menorcan hospital and Guardia Civil officers\u2019 accounts of alleged paranormal phenomena. This is what the programme reported, rather than proof that ghosts were present.<\/p>\n

According to the account presented by the programme, a security guard\u2019s report of unusual noises and movements brought officers to the building in 2007. They described sounds, shadows and lights switching on and off. These are witnesses\u2019 reported experiences; a paranormal interpretation is not an established fact.<\/p>\n

A building with a history beyond the mystery<\/h2>\n

Verge del Toro also belongs to Menorca\u2019s healthcare history and the personal memories of many island families. That deserves as much respect as the television story inspires curiosity.<\/p>\n

Nor does the building\u2019s story end with that broadcast. IB-Salut describes a refurbishment project intended to return it to a healthcare role<\/a>. We are discussing the context of the report, rather than presenting the site as a horror attraction or suggesting a visit inside.<\/p>\n
