The Lazareto Island of Menorca<\/strong> is for sale, specifically a good part of it that covers just over 7 hectares, and the real estate agency Ses Moreres<\/a> that sold the well-known Colom Island has been commissioned, again, to market this islet located within Mahon harbour.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

For those who have never heard of Lazareto island<\/a> before, I will summarise that it is an islet within Mah\u00f3n harbour that houses an impressive hospital fortress built in the 18th century that served from 1816 to 1916 to control the health of the maritime traffic that arrived at the port, at a time ravaged by terrible contagious diseases such as plague and leprosy. The high walls of this hospital complex isolated almost 400,000 people (including crew and passengers) who, in compliance with the laws of the time, had to go through quarantine.\u00a0 Tourist visits are currently being made to this place of great interest.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Well, now were placed, I will go on to explain that practically the part that is being sold is one half of the island, which is privately owned. If you look at the map that accompanies this article you will notice that this part is in an almost virgin state, with the exception of a small house and some agricultural buildings. There is no doubt that we are talking about a strategic enclave in Mahon harbour which enjoys incomparable views. In addition, this property will be greatly revalued if the project presented is approved, which sets out to recover the agricultural activity which existed, build a private jetty and, perhaps (and this will be more complicated) join the islet with the island by means of a drawbridge.<\/p>\n

Many people will ask themselves: And what’s the point of having an island on which you can’t build…? Well, I would answer them with another question: Why do so many people buy works of art worth millions of Euros…? The answer is obvious: To enjoy them and to safeguard them. This analogy serves to explain why the sale of private islands arouses so much interest, since the possibility of owning your own island, or a good part of one as in this case, is a highly suggestive idea.<\/p>\n
